Bulgarian lev: The lev is the currency of Bulgaria. It is divided in 100 stotinki. In archaic Bulgarian the word "lev" meant "lion".
Money can be exchanged safely in the banks and also at reputable exchange bureaus (hotels and airports usually quote less favour­able rates). Exchange bureaus are required to display clearly the exchange rates and they are no longer allowed to charge commis­sions, so check this first. Exchange rates at the time of publishing: 1 EURO -- 1.95583 BGN. Banks are open from 09:00 to 16:30 Monday to Friday. Exchange bureaus are usually open from 09:00 until 17:00 or 18:00 and stay open later in summer. There are also non­stop exchange bureaus. In Sofia there are plenty of ATMs, with particular concentration in the city centre. All major European and North American credit cards are accepted in the country.




The main international credit cards are accepted in most hotels, shopping centres, car rental offices and some restaurants. The stickers on the shop-windows or at the hotel entrances will provide you with information as to which credit cards are accepted.


Tap water is safe to drink. However, we advise you to drink bottled mineral water.


The population of Bulgaria is about 7 000 000 people; 1.2 million live in the capital (Sofia).


Other spoken languages in the Sofia are English and German.


The main religion in Bulgaria is Eastern Orthodox; other - Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, etc.



Sofia is well connected to many European capitals and large cities through a lot of direct regular flights, railways and bus services. Flight time from Europe to Sofia is less than three hours.

Sofia falls within the humid continental climate zone with long winters and long summers. The average annual temperature is 10.3 °C (50.5 °F). With around 85 rainy days annually, the city receives an average precipitation of 610 mm (24 inches) a year, reaching its peak in the beginning of the summer when thunderstorms are not uncommon.

Springs and autumns may be quite short in Sofia. They might be mild though heat waves in September or snowfalls in March would not be that uncommon.

Summer is quite warm and sunny. Due to its higher altitude location, Sofia remains a little bit cooler than some other parts of Bulgaria. July and August heat waves may hit the city with temperatures as high as 40 °C (104 °F) for days on end.

Winter is cold and snowy. In the coldest days temperature may drop down to –15 °C (5 °F) or even lower in January and February. A typical winter in Sofia would have 40 snowy days on average with a total snowfall of around 90 cm (35.5 inches) and about 60 days with snow cover.
